Thermal comfort and windproof

Wind considerably increases the effect of the cold! So, for an outside temperature of 0°C and 20 km/h winds, it will feel like the temperature is -10°C. ""Windproof"" components help eliminate the discomfort linked to this ""freezing effect"". They are very effective at reducing heat loss by creating a barrier against the wind.

Water-repellent component (different to being waterproof)

The water repellent property of a fabric is its ability to make water run off its surface without absorbing it. As a result, the fabric does not soak up water & stays light, breathable & warm. A fabric becomes water-repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. This treatment must be renewed throughout the garment's lifetime (recommended after every three washes).

Component breathability

To find out if a fabric is breathable, its evaporative resistance RET (test based on ISO 11092) is measured. The lower the fabric's resistance, the more water vapour generated by physical activity is able to evaporate, and the higher the fabric's breathability. For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric / 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric / 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric / RET > 20 = little or no breathability.
